The Director of Special Education is responsible for ensuring that all federal and state regulations related to special education are implemented by assisting administrators and teachers within the schools to ensure that appropriate educational services are delivered to all identified students. The Director also serves as an instructional leader and collaborative partner with the Instructional Department, school administrators, teachers, and other division leaders to promote high-quality instruction, equitable access to the curriculum, and improved academic outcomes for students with disabilities, sharing responsibility and ownership for their instructional success and achievement across the division.

Qualifications: 1. Must hold a Virginia license with endorsements in Special Education and Administration and Supervision 2. Masters Degree in Special Education or related field 3. Knowledge of special education regulations for the Commonwealth of Virginia 4. Excellent communication and organizational skills 5. Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures; ability to develop and provide in-service training to staff; ability to interpret test data; ability to interpret state special education regulations and inform staff of any changes 6. Proficiency in the use of technology and software programs 7. Ability to work cooperatively with many different personalities and to handle crisis situations 8. Must be able to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact 9. Five (5) years of experience in a field related to special education within a school setting 10. Satisfactory completion of all onboarding requirements prior to first day of employment, including, but not limited to: Documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S. Virginia State Police/FBI criminal history background check Virginia Department of Social Services background check Tuberculosis test/screening completed within the last 12 months

Essential Duties: 1. Works collaboratively with the Instructional Department and all other departments within the division to align special education services with division-wide instructional priorities, strengthen access to high-quality core instruction and specially designed instruction, and improve academic outcomes for students with disabilities. 2. Collaborates with principals, instructional leaders, and teachers to support and strengthen instruction for students with disabilities through classroom visits, consultation, data analysis, identification of instructional needs, and implementation of evidence-based practices designed to improve student outcomes. 3. Uses student achievement, progress-monitoring, and other relevant data in collaboration with instructional leaders to identify areas of need, evaluate the effectiveness of instructional practices and programs, and develop strategies for improving outcomes for students with disabilities. 4. Builds and maintains positive relationships with the Directors of Instruction and other instructional leaders to strengthen collaboration, alignment, and shared responsibility for the instructional success of students with disabilities. 5. Implements staffing systems and procedures to ensure equity and organizational efficiency. 6. Communicates via telephone, mail, and in person with out of division placements. 7. Develops and implements division-wide training. 8. Monitors Individual Education Plans (IEP) for compliance and time lines. 9. Analyzes regulatory information. 10. Communicates and confers with parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals. 11. Attends and/or conducts meetings (eligibility, IEP, conferences, staff). 12. Responsible for assisting in the development, implementation and evaluation of programs and services for students with disabilities. 13. Assists in the application, implementation, and evaluation of various grants. 14. Assists in resolving educational issues related to all aspects of the provision of special education services. 15. Keeps abreast of all new developments in the area of special education and disseminates information to staff and teachers. 16. Supervises related services personnel. 17. Supervises other programs related to special education (jail services, Extended School Year services (ESY), and out of division placements). 18. Acts in a courteous and respectful manner, using good judgment and appropriate communication skills at all times. 19. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding students, parents, and other staff members. 20. Models non-discriminatory behavior in all activities. 21. Performs related work as required.

Physical: Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment. No significant amount of climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and other repetitive motions.
